On February 28, 2022, the AATF (American Association of Teachers of French) announced the winners of their National French Week Media contest, and Madame Bouré’s AP French class at Caribou High School placed in the top tier! This award carries a cash prize which the students want to use for a field trip this spring. Actors Michael Cyr, Mikaela Spooner, Chloe Sleeper, and Naomi Cote ranked first out of over 90 video submissions, with judge Catherine Ousselin remarking to Madame Bouré, “Vos élèves sont formidables!” (Your students are tremendous!).
Alissa Evans was the videographer and Chloe Sleeper wrote and edited the short film. Students were required to make a three-minute presentation with the prompt “Venez Au Monde Francophone”, meaning “Come to the French World”. The video made by the Caribou High School students follows a French-Acadian grandmother and granddaughter and the struggle to maintain the language and culture over generations.
As part of their French studies at CHS, these students have studied Acadian history, read “Au Revoir, l’Acadie” and toured the Acadian Village in Van Buren to gain a greater understanding of the struggle of the Acadians in Aroostook County following the Grand Dérangement as well as the negative stereotypes associated with ‘Valley French’ following Maine laws that forbid students from speaking their native French in schools in the mid 20th century. The students’ goal is to bring more awareness to the rich culture and history of the Acadians by including cultural elements such as the Catholic faith, ployes, Tintamarre heads, and of course, French.
In January, the French Honor Society worked together to teach a three-week seminar for Power Hour at Caribou Community School to share their knowledge with younger students.
The Caribou National Honor Society held its annual induction ceremony on Thursday, March 3, 2022 at the Caribou Performing Arts Center, inducting 15 new members to the organization. Chapter President Naomi Cote welcomed guests and discussed the importance of the National Honor Society before new members were inducted. “Members of this chapter are more than just good grades and good performance in school,” she said. “The members of the National Honor Society are well rounded individuals that contribute to their families, their school and their community.” Newly inducted members for the 2021-2022 school year are: Kayley Bell, Jadynn Blackstone-Eye, Ashlyn Bouchard, James Cherrier, Kathryn Doody, Colin Dumont, Alissa Evans, Landyn Hyde, Lilly Johnson Roy, Rebecca Matley, Griffen McNeal, Kallee Parent, Selena Savage, Nevaeh Trombley, Courtney Whitmore. With 15 members before Thursday’s induction, the Caribou National Honor Society now consists of 30 members. Those who were members before the Thursday ceremony are Sierra Beaulieu (Vice President), Naomi Cote (President), Michael Cyr, Kerigan Guerrette, Abbiegale McNeal, Cassidy Page (Historian), Amanda Poulin (Treasurer), Kathleen Powers, Chloe Sleeper, Jessica Soucy, Mikaela Spooner, Gabrielle Sutherland, Mia Theriault (Secretary), Jordan Thompson, Alden Wilcox. Caribou High School Names “Student of the Month” for the Month of February.
Claire Ouellette of Caribou, a Sophomore at Caribou High School, has been selected as the Caribou High School’s Student of the Month for the Month of February, Principal Dr. Eric McGough announced today. The award, sponsored by the Caribou Chapter of the National Honor Society, is given in recognition of a high school student’s academic achievement and citizenship.
The Student of the Month program is meant to promote success in and out of the classroom. For a student to be a well-respected citizen, they must be able to balance many different areas of life. They must exemplify outstanding characteristics both as a student and as a citizen of the community. The student must be able to handle many different aspects of student life while maintaining excellence in the classroom. This award is designed to nominate and select students who promote and take pride in Caribou High School and in themselves.
To be nominated as Student of the Month the candidate must be a current high school student. The student will exemplify character in and out of the classroom. Students are nominated by Caribou High School Faculty and Administration each month. The selected student's picture and name will be showcased during the month of recognition both at school and on the school website. The administration will also present a Student of the Month Certificate to the student.
